Hi Malc. The overhaul "kits" are fine for what they are, but tend to have the tin inlet gasket instead of the better composite ones, that's why I don't use the kits. If you're planning on coming over this way let me know, if the workshop is clear it isn't a big job to check the lobes for wear. FWIW,...

Malc, your camshaft will almost certainly be well worn at that mileage. It can be checked in-situ, there are ways!! Your engine, if original, will be a low compression also - this doesn't help. There are mods that can be done to the dizzy advance curve to get a bit more mid-range oomph out of it. Wh...

One thing I'd strongly advise though, if fitting to a 3.9 or larger engine, fit a stud kit for far superior clamping and do away with those pathetic stretch bolts! I've replaced so many 4.6 head gaskets over the years...

Leave the sleeve fitted to restrict the total advance and set the timing at idle (no vacuum) to about 10 degrees BTDC - this will give good pickup at low rpm's with the low compression engine without running the risk of high-speed pinking.

"a V8 engine specialist after a one of the newly installed top hat line slipped" Hi Royston, was that perchance the same company that produced 3 engine blocks that I've had to strip and have re-machined to sort out liner-slippage issues? "Won't name names as it could well have been a one off" Not if...
