Thanks John & Chris, Checked that the plug leads were correctly fitted - I only took off No 2 & 4 from the RH bank to get the rocker covers off. The engine was really reluctant to start and sounded flat and unwilling to rev like the time I refitted the rocker shafts without the shims under the posts...

I believe low compression commercial engines use a very mild camshaft profile which increases dynamic compression ratio and low speed torque. Static compression ratio is therefore decreased to prevent detonation on low octane fuel. As the camshaft gets more radical and valve overlap increases, more ...

4.6 Rocker arms on 3.5 engine
Hi all, I replaced my worn rocker gear with a set from a 4.6 Range Rover and now my engine is missfiring and difficult to start.
Car is a 3500 Rover SD1. Engine ran okay before apart from the tappety noise from the worn rockers. I thought 3.5 to 4.6 Rocker gear was a straight swap ?

Thanks for the replies :) i think I will send the parts back for a refund - it would be good to have the Leyland's spec for the tolerance on the shaft incase they wont accept if anyone has those :) . The manufacturer says that the parts are within spec which i doubt with 0.12mm clearance..surely new...

Rover V8 rocker shaft clearance..is this okay ?
Hi I recently bought a set of Rover V8 rocker arms and shafts for my SD1. I noticed there seems to be quite a bit of play between the shaft and rockers so I measured them... Shaft is 20.53mm Bore of rocker is 20.65mm I make that a clearance of 0.12mm which seems too much. Similar engines I have look...

Hi You said you have replaced the tappets but not the cam, the result of doing this will be very accelerated wear of the cam lobes (did it myself on on my first rover rebuild because, I thought I had a dud lifter, result I killed the cam in about 100 miles). the cam lobe and lifter have to be run t...

Re: Engine knock
I'm writing hoping someone has a idea what may be wrong with my SD1 3.5RV8. fitted to my TR7. Basically it has a knock which only appears when it is hot (after driving 5 or 6 miles), the bulk of the noise seems to be coming from the top of the engine, at one time removing one spark plug (cyl2 on rh...

LPG Filling up -
Hi all, Has anyone noticed that different lpg stations give different amounts of lpg for a fill up?. I filled up at 2 stations on the M1 last night after the first fill i travelled about 6 miles and got another 20 litres in at the next service station!. Is this normal - i presume the second station ...

One more thought.... I know rhoads lifters can be noisey as hell due to the high bleed down rate.... Maybe your lifters are bleeding down very quickly? Thanks for those suggestions chaps It seems like it's oil pressure related as the noise only gets bad when the engine is idling and the oil pressur...

Smoker, I would suggest checking that you have a good oil supply to the valve gear, as you have had the heads off it is quite possible that when they were re-fitted that they were switched from one bank of cylinders to the other, this is perfectly ok as oil ways are drilled in the heads so that the...

Thanks Ian, All the manifold gaskets are only a few thousand miles old and I check the bolt tightness regularly but I will check again. It does sound more 'mechanical' than anything. It's so strange I started it up from cold again tonight and the noise had almost gone away. i get a loud 'ticking' wh...
