Just to close this one out, I’m pleased to say it’s running great now.
Was indeed a combination of inlet air leaks (where I removed the hot spot plate under the plenum intake) and a dying fuel pump due to rust tank innards!
New tank, pump and filter, plus air leaks plugged and we’re all good!
Your smoke cannister sounds like a great idea! My method worked but it wasn’t very elegant!! Yes it’s the two bolt holes nearest to the engine on the ‘hot spot’ plate which go right through into the plenum inlet. Worth a check as it wasn’t obvious. Re fuel pressure, yes I think you’re right - limp m...
This weekend’s update… :D Found two interesting things, so adding it here in case it helps others. Firstly I did a smoke test on the intake system. My cheapo solution was to do as follows: 1. Remove plenum intake pipe and maf. 2. Cable tie the throttle butterfly open. 3. Find a suitable plug for the...
 Definitely a whiff of Partridge about that video! Good to see it all laid out though. Thanks for sharing, really useful. Yep, can see now that it’s the signal wire from coil to ecu and it does come out close to the MAF connector. All connected on mine. Having done some more research I do...
Yes, the RG is telling me I’m running Tune 2 (uk no cats), which lines up with the tune resistor fitted. ECU is standard and not tampered with as far as I can see, but there’s no guarantees. Fuel regulator is a new Genuine Land Rover part (standard RR part and position). Pump was new earlier this ye...
I only disconnected the MAF sensor to see if it would run in limp/default map. The connections appear to be fine when it’s plugged in. Voltage as expected and I can see it working on the Rovergauge display.
Ok, here’s this weekend’s update… Intake system carefully sealed (manifold to trumpet base, trumpet base to plenum, and IACV housing). All vac lines attached and appear to draw a vacuum (i.e. no split hoses or diaphragms). Throttle butterfly gap set with feeler gauge. Hooked up Rovergauge - have con...
Thanks - fingers crossed for Rovergauge giving some clues! Re air leaks, I have found a place doing plenum gaskets, so I will give these a try - I also don’t like using sealant everywhere! https://www.classeparts.com/products/range-rover-v8-efi-engine-new-plenum-chamber-improved-complete-gasket-set ...
Thanks for you advice here, much appreciated! I came to the same conclusion earlier today and ordered a cable so I can get Rovergauge hooked up as a next step. Will hopefully take some guesswork out of it. Completely agree with your comment about new parts not always meaning they’re ok - I buy genui...
Just one thing to add - with the MAF connected it can be kept running with some throttle pedal, but it’s a real challenge! Is this just something wildly out of adjustment perhaps??
Evening folks! I am finishing off a longstanding project, an ex-military Half Ton (Lightweight) Land Rover with a freshly built standard-ish 3.9 14CUX hotwire V8 lump. Thanks to everyone who had contributed to this forum, it’s been a huge help to me. It has been a fun and satisfying project and my f...
Haven't got a fuel pressure gauge unfortunately so don't know if the pressure is too high at the rail. I agree that the pressure regulator may be causing this, but I'll probably work through all the electrical tests in the Haynes first (and maybe use a diagnostic plug-in box) before buying a new reg...
Ok, just had a quick look at the old Lightweight to eliminate a few things: 1. Fuel return line - Looks ok, plenty of fuel returning to tank. 2. Vac pipe between plenum and fuel regulator - Is definitely attached but too dark to check for splits etc. I seem to recall there was no obvious damage when...
