Before you go off the deep end post a picture, Chances are it'll be OK but it's hard to tell just from a description.

The thread is 3/4" UNEF.
Unless you have access to machinery so you can guarantee the squareness of the heli-coil (even then there still wont be a lot of material left for strength) plus the amount of messing about involved I personally would bite the bullet & get another cover.

You only need the valves to hit by a few thou to cause damage & this is probably the reason they weren't seated.

I would say you were lucky the lifters weren't pumped up properly.

Hasn't your engine got nearly 200,000 miles on it? Probably blowing like an unfit pensioner in a marathon.

SD1 mounts are totally different.

Hi Paul,

I set mine at 0.005"/0.127mm using a finger clock on one of the cam lobes.
The front cover was on & off three or four times before I got it right.

Are you over tightening them?

I check with a gasket in place. If too much or too little end float I then mic the gasket thickness & make a new gasket of the correct thickness to bring the end float to within tolerance.

82-85 was the DM8 Dave.
