Brilliant stuff !!!!! Right, i'll go over the system head to tailpipe and look for leaks. I tig welded the whole (manifold back) system myself so there may be a few pin holes as well. im guessing the noise is likely to be caused more by a leak close to the head / manifold area ??? read a few topics ...

Thanks for the input. it doesn't do it on over run - the only time it doesn't I do suspect a small leak at the manifold to down pipe joint as i've had problems sealing it before. Will this cause detonation, or simply make a sound like detonation ? also the noise happens when holding even a few revs ...

Causes of Pinking

My 3.5 SD1 V8 sounds like its pinking (detonating) all the time. The exhaust note has a loud metallic 'tinkle' over the V8 rumble. This occurs as soon as I touch the throttle pedal, whether under load or not (up or down hill) I started with the timing at 10 BTDC @ 1200rpm with vac disconnected as pe...

Update, after buying an innovate wide band afr gauge i have learnt alot about jetting. I cannot recommend it enough to get fueling right. For example, when working blind, i found going much richer made my v8 feel stronger so i kept going richer. When in fact all i was doing was jetting the primaries...

At 100cc in 10 seconds per 100hp a 200hp engine would need 200cc in 10 seconds which is 1200cc per min which is 72000cc per hour which is 19 us gallons per hour. - Sad or what !!!! The (new) silver top facet pump i am using gives 30 us gallons per hour so i figure im safe. I suspect if my fuel pump ...

Thanks Nosman, I had the very same fueling issue you mention on another car i had. Would go like stink from a standing start until 3rd gear when is would mysteriously run into a wall. i couldn't figure why 3rd gear every time ??? I felt daft when someone pointed out it was running on the fuel in the...

Thank you perry, that is very much appreciated. My V8 is in a 1967 series land rover, which makes it not the best cruiser out there. So MK is a little far. Jet wise, i think i am nearly there now and a £3.50 a pair its not too bad. I hope testing goes well, just seen that you MG is running in the 10...

Spent today going through various things, I checked the fuel pressure which never dropped below 4 psi whilst on the move. I fitted an additional silencer which has now brought the exhaust note down to a less painful volume. In turn this has enabled me to 'listen' to the engine a little more. What at...

If the car is hitting a wall at 3000rpm and wont go any further, my guess would be fuel pressure. If this problem has occurred over time, i'd check filters and lines for crap including the intank strainer, and then prove the pump delivery by seeing if the pressure drops off whilst on the move. My ap...

Thank you Perry What rating power valve do you have fitted?? ie what vacuum rating? - a standard 6.5 as recommend by holley for mild engines although i have tried a 5. Can you tell me the carb model number so I can look up the holley diagram. Unless you have one?? - carb is a 4160 i have a diagram o...

thanks Topcat. The Occiloscope on the kripton tune initially showed my spark voltage to be of the scale. The leads showed open circuit. This was due to me fighting to get the boots on the 'cut to length leads' and breaking them. After replacing them, the spark voltage came down to a sensible level (...

thanks for all of your help so far. I am based in leicester. I measured the timing, lift and duration of the cam. All were very close to the data sheet. the lowest inlet was 0.18mm down and the lowest exhaust was 0.21mm down on spec the inlet duration was 266 (should be 270) and exhaust 280 (should ...

Holley Help

I have an 3.5 SD1 engine with a kent 200 cam and Holley 4160 390cfm vac secondaries on a offy 360 inlet manifold. It is a family engine used by my father 15 years ago. It was rebuilt back then with a hone, rings, crank grind etc. It only did 2000 miles in a Chevrolet before being pulled out and dry ...
