P38 GEMS Coil Packs

Post by Spongo »

When they go faulty do they fail on just one output or both, I seems to have a coil pack that is providing an output on one turret but not the other? Been swapping leads around and proved it, I have another on the way but it did seem strange to me.

Hi
on a 2 pole coil pack to test them you need a plug in each lead that is earthed, I have spent hours over the years testing just one end with the other floating . . . . ie both work or both don't.
actually having a bit more think about it you could have a dead short on one post to earth, but that can be checked in 30 seconds with a multi meter.
best regards

Reason I ask is that's if I swap leads 1 and 6 the fault moves, it's the only common point as far as I can see

I guess it depends on the fault, but as has been said, if one has shorted to ground (or broken down so it sparks to ground internally), then you could get a coil pack that appeared to only work on one output.

All sorted turned out to be a bad joint on one of the wires going into coil pack 3, so I now have a spare GEMS coilpack :?
