Wont run without choke
Hi New to this forum. I have a 71 Rover 3500. I had running issues. I have to date replaced the following Camshaft lifters timing chain rebuilt carbs changed cap rotor and leads tried electronic ignition rebuilt fuel pump.
Since doing this I still cannot get it to run without full choke and it will not rev. As soon as throttle is touched it dies. Which is the problem I had before completing work. I have even tried an electric fuel pump from a can.
The old cam was shot as 3 lobes were completely round and the rest badly worn. The seals in the carbs were brittle and cracked the needles and jets were also replaced.
I am looking for advice or indeed if anyone is close to me who would be willing to have a look for me to see if I have missed something.

It sounds like a massive air leak into the inlet system somewhere.
Get some easy start or similar in an aerosol can.
Start the engine and spray around head to manifold and manifold to carb areas, and also around the carbs.
If engine note suddenly rises you are sucking in air and now it is sucking in the start stuff.
As a thought is the vac advance connected?
And again, is the brake booster connected?
Have you tried blocking both to stop air ingress?

Owner of an "On the Road" GT40 Replica by DAX powered by 3.9Hotwre Efi, worked over by DJ Motors. EFi Working but still does some kangaroo at low revs (Damn the speed limits) In to paint shop 18/03/08.
All hose are new. Car has new looking DLB110 lucas coil. However I have got a new one today to try as well as a condenser.Rossco wrote:Are you 100% certain that the cam is timed in correctly?
Check your ignition timing again.
What coil are you running?
Have you replaced all air and vacuum lines?
Will recheck timing will have to set static as it wont idle.

Is there fuel in both carbs? Is it being sucked out of the jets? If you remove the inlet trunking, and shine a torch at the jet, you should see the fuel being drawn past the jet. Does it look similar on both carbs?
On my P6 3500S, I had a poor seal at the bottom of one jet - which took ages to find.
