shorter front end on RV8

Post by sven »

As some of you might have seen in the drivetrain forum I have started a project, putting a Rv8 in a suzuki SJ413. I currently have a 3.9 from a range rover with flapper injectieon.

one little problem is that the front end on the engine is long... Is there anything I can do to makt it shorter?

another oil or waterpump, move the distributor, orsomething like that?

all hints and tips will be highly appreciated:)

Hi
From your other post and this one can I suggest looking at 101fc bell housing and front ancillaries, I think this had about the shortest set up for a factory rover V8. One of the issues with the rover is that for a low capacity low power small block V8 is that it is relatively big, especially it is long, nearly as long as the small block ford and for a small block V8 the SBF is thought to be long. This is because all the timing gear, oil pump and everything else Buick could think of is stuck on the front of it and just to cap it all they made the 4.0/4.6 motors 1/2" longer!
If you are stuck for space I would look at your choice of engine again, the mopar small block is quite a bit shorter and has a wider selection of ways to make it shorter still, the LS chevys are very compact especially front to back, a 4.8 would be more than big enough, the Gen 1 small block chevy can be built with a very compact front set up that makes it shorter than the Rover. Getting a bit more specialised the AMC/international combine small block V8 is pretty short, this has a gear cam drive set up that makes it shorter than a more conventional chain set up you could also consider a flat head ford or a Cadillac Northstar V8 both are short/compact engines.
Best of luck

Measure up the engine in a Range Rover P38. That is as short as it goes. You then have to fangle up a distributorless ignition system, but can use a carburettor inlet manifold.

I believe so. If there is no distributor, and a single serpentine belt, and the water pump is driven from the back of the belt, then yes it is the same.

Is it definitely a 3.9, flapper wasnt factory fitted to anything other than 3.5.
I dont know which country you are in but another engine you could consider is the 3.8 V6 buick engine, two cylinders shorter and similar capacity
