distributor question

Post by holley »

Hi Guys, I found a listing on ebay stating

NEW 3.9 V8 Lucas type 35D Distributor with 3 pin Ignition module comes complete

Fits ALL Land Rover 3.9 engines and TVR, Morgan

Will fit some 3.5 engines but a two pin converter wire is needed,

I have a tvr engine which is the 3.5, would this distributor be ok to use ?

Cheers Guys

Holley

dizzy compatibility

Post by blz6662 »

Hi Holley, if that's the RPI one - I've bought it earlier today (they have more don't worry). I have that model fitted in my 88 range rover already, so should be OK. I bought the new one for my other project which is a series 2a hybrid with 3.9 Morgan V8 fitted - this has the same front cover as my rangie so I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Baden

Although they will physically fit, you need to be aware of a few subtle differences:
- Pins on amplifier (2 or 3)
- Ignition curve
- Location of vac advance unit with reference to amplifier (see pic below)

Not sure if it will fit, it most likely will. It looks like you have an SD1 style fitted to the engine, and you have bought a Range Rover style. This way around I think will be OK. Definitely fitting an SD1 type to a Range Rover engine is problematic.

The main thing to watch is the amount of adjustment you have by turning the distributor body. You might find that the vac advance unit or amplifier fouls on the water pump or rocker cover when you try to turn the distributor. You can work around it by removing the distributor and turning it one tooth on the camshaft, but it's all a bit fiddly!
