Replacement Rocker Cover gaskets How Much ?

Post by BlueTonka »

Hi All
My rocker cover rubber gaskets need replacing on my v8
dont fancy trying this one myself, how much would a independant mechanic/garage usually charge for doin this ?? and how long does the job usually take. could a novice (me) with a few spanners do it?

Cheers

Hi

The rocker cover gaskets are fairly simple - (depending onyour induction setup) Should just be a few pipes to disconnect and 4 screws each side.

It would be worth buying a workshop manual (they're around £20 from places like Rimmer bros) Once you've got the manual, you can then see what is involved and decide whether or not you have the confidence to tackle the job - you'll soon find that these engines aren't particularly difficult to work on

It should take about 1/2-1 hour and cost under £10, the rocker cover gaskets are notoriously tricky to get to seal, when fitting new ones, clean off the old gasket from both faces, and de-grease them, using a contact adhesive, evostick is fine, glue the new gaskets onto the covers, once this is done, the gaskets wont slide about when fitting, with a light smear of Blue Hylomar on the gasket-to-head faces reassemble, screwing down evenly, and dont screw the covers so tight they burst the gaskets,

rubber rocker cover gaskets are under a tenner (Eg, here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RANGE-ROVER-V8-RU ... 240%3A1318

As far as I'm aware (prepare to be flamed  ) you don't need any sealant etc. Four bolts on each cover allows them to be removed. Just make sure the mating surfaces are clean

Also Rubber Gaskets should come with spacers so you cannot over compress them.

Dave!!
Bring it over mate. We can swap them out in 30 mins no probs. Assuming you are talking rocker covers and not heads.

I still use cork on mine ..

Hi Perry :D

Tonka. I have used cork and rubber with no problems with either.

The trick as has been mentioned, is to glue them in position before assembly.
