Can I turn my rad sideways ?

Post by jonny m »

I've a narrow width opening, but all the rads I can find are wide.

The rads i am looking at have ports on left and right, so would end up top and bottom, so seems fine.

But, is there anything inside the make up of a radiators elements that means they can't be tuned on their side?

Jon

Until the introduction of crossflow rads , most flowed up/down.
Provided the hot coolant flows in at the top all should be fine.

It's important to channel the air through the cores and prevent it from getting around the sides.

The mouth of the truck will take this within a couple of millimetres, which is why I'm keen on using it.

Just wasn't sure if there was anything in the make up of a horizonsl rad, that might have prevented it being turned to vertical

It took me a second to understand what you meant. You want to rotate the rad by 90 degree's dont you?

As Denis say's. As long as you chuck the hot water into the top connection it should be fine.

My old MGB rad has the headers top and bottom. But most modern cars have the headers on each side. I cant see a problem with this :)

Yep, 90 degree turn, still resulting with a top / bottom combo

Fans pre fitted is a bonus too

Hi
I hadn't really thought about it until this post but yes it should be fine as described, minis certaily used to be fed top to bottom as did a lot of older cars I have worked on, everything newer I can think of is side to side :? :?
Best regards

I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't work.
If you are unsure, add an extra row to the core
if that's possible.
Cheers,
John

Some modern crossflow rad have internal dividers which make the coolant flow left and right more than once before exiting. You are unlikely to have one of those. It should be obvious under inspection of the end tanks if there are any internal dividers. Poke a wire carefully through the hose inlets/outlets and you should be able to feel and dividers if they are there.
