SD1 coolant leak

Post by BrenG »

I have a leak on my SD1 V8 EFi - I have a stream of coolant dripping down the back of the block, and I can see coolant on the valley gasket. I have a drip from the thermostat housing, but not enough to create the volume that is finding it's way out of the engine.

Any culprits? Inlet manifold to come off?

Look at the back of the inlet manifold and there is a little steel plate bolted on with one of the water hoses attached to it. It could be that, or there's a pipe running under the manifold which could have sprung a leak. If the latter, it's a manifold off job.

The heater pipe which screws into the front of the manifold and runs underneath to the back is made of steel and notorious for rusting through. Think Rimmer may have had them re-manufactured. I made my own replacement using ordinary plumbing bits I had lying around - and being copper/brass should have a decent life. The only PITA is the amount of work need to replace it - the manifold has to come off.
