If the heater works, it means the water is running the opposite way through the heater (i.e. it is starting from the 'bizarre' connection behind the water pump.

You might find a 'stat with a bleed hole in it helps matters if you are getting air-locks.

Glad it's all working though.

Another thought - if the heater is being fed from that extra port behind the water pump, that is where the water is at it's coolest. Not the most sensible place to take a heater feed from......

I was also going to mention that - along with the thought that the actual pressure differential between the connections to ensure flow through the heater may also be quite low and therefore susceptible to continual air locking.
