RV8... which thermostat to go for?

Post by Jono FD3 »

Guys, firstly I presume all the RV8 stats are the same...
and which would you recomend.... the 82C or 88C option for the drifter?? probably spen a fair bit of time around 4-5k RPM

I would go for the 82 personally as you'll have max power and min airflow through the rad, so you want the best chance poss.

For drifting lose the stat alltogether. Make a restrictor ring to fit in its place and set the fans to cut in at 75C.

Restrictor ring bore size = opening of stat in mm x circumference of the disk.

This will give max flow all the time while simulating the rsistance of a fully open stat but without the turbulence of water having to wind its way through a stat. You intend to have the car revving its nuts off at fairly low speeds so you need all the cooling you can find.

good thought about the resistor ring in place of the stat.....
what size hole would be OK... say 25mm??

Cooling fans are on a switch and tend to be left on while we are running the engine to get the best cooling as you tend to be high RPM and the air flow is very rarely square on to the front of the vehicle... so having the fans running all the time seems to over come this issue!

Take your existing stat and cut out the middle part

I'm pretty sure that the hole in my stat was bigger than the sum of the opening gap. I didnt want to risk flowing too much and starving the rear of the engine. :)
