It now runs and idles.
And by the looks of it she should be able to go forwards and backwards :)

Does it have a cooling system?

Chris.

Surely you can't run it for long then??

Dude!!
I hear that all the time from birds who I have taken for a night out :)

Who needs a cooling system when the fuel you use sucks so much heat from the bores that you actually need to hammer the engine to get it warm??

This methanol poop is Mental??

Around 10 minutes of running an engine with no cooling system or water inside made me shudder. But facts are facts..... Oil storage tank was around 90C but the block was only 60C ?? The slower you run the engine on Meth, the colder it gets??

Hi Dave
when I started looking into running methanol I was very doubtfull about being able to run for long enough to be able to set it up without the thing overheating but. . . . we kept a close eye for anything getting hot, and basically set up as it is now it doesn't! To get it to warm up enough for the idle to get stable and for it to start cleanly we were having to lean it off on the shyt off valve, diverting probably a third of the fuel back to the tank, it would then warm up, when warm it would settle to a decent idle and pick up on the throttle nicely but it didn't get very hot.
I do have the dry sump set up on it and the pushes alot of oil through the engine, I have the valley scavenged, no restrictors in the gallerys that would normally limmit oil to the top of the engine and the holes that would normally drop oil through the valley are blocked off so any heat in the oil at the top end doesn't get carried to the bottom of the engine, it goes straight to the tank.
Mixture wise, I was advised by a chap who had been running methanol for 17 years that "if it makes you cry then it is running with a safe mixture" I think I will use "if it makes Reg cry then it is running safe"
When I have a few runs under my belt I will try running it a bit leaner, I calculated it will be at about 5:1 about 3 or 4 jets/pills leaner than I am running at the moment but I am not in any rush to lean it off yet.
Everything I have ead says that the issue with methanol is getting enough heat into the engine before a run and on the start line, and this is looking like being thoroughly true, just a bit difficult to get used to!
Come up the Pod and have a look and a chat it is quite fascinating to see for real!
Best regards
Mike
