Supercharged e39 M5

Post by Rossco »

Finally manged to get round to fitting the Vortech.

Just waiting for a piece of 70mm ID boost pipe to replace the somewhat short length between the blower and the inlet pipe.

Only done 100 miles so still breaking it in but first impressions are

HEALTH WARNING

If you know two people - Tony Cooper and Elliot Mansfield - I suggest you stay well away from them if you have a supercharged setup.

HISTORY

The supercharged M5 wiped out two cylinders due to poor fuelling caused by undersize injectors supplied by the vendor.

£6k later and on only the first day with it back on the road I visit the above mentioned Tony Cooper to hear his supercharger woes and the horror story of a seized charger.

On only the second day with it back on the road I visit the above mentioned Elliot Mansfield. "doesn't whine much for a supercharger does it " he says.........5 miles after leaving his gaff it starts to whine.

Today I discover the charger has blown a seal with the result it's wiped the hi-speed bearings.

Repair kit now on it's way from the USA......anyone want to assist in rebuilding a V3

New Vortech arrived this morning along with uprated injectors and an uprated fuel pump.

Should have it all back on the road tomorrow.

Who re-built it for you? and where did you get the new bearings? Did the compressor wheel damage/contact the housing?

My Procharger wiped out the high speed bearings (I was running it at 80k rpm, it's max listed rpm but the bearings i have discovered were only rated at 20k rpm!!! ).

Have nearly re-built - been a right challenge, sourced 100K bearing from the states, and new bigger compressor wheel 8) but struggling with someone to re-machine my compressor housing - it's been with a company now for several months who have let me down.

Tom

I brought a new one in from the States.

Will be stripping the old one down in the next few weeks to see what damage there is.

Aha, what compressor have did you get? Is it the same as the old one?

I would guess you have a similar failure mode to mine in that the high speed bearing (the one near the compressor wheel failed) which means the compressor wheel can contact the housing and self destruct!

Will be interesting to see photo's of yours when its opened up.
