I cant see any real engine problems from open primaries.
It will be an interesting project, and fun to hopefully see some flames.
I was contemplating slipping some copper pins through the pipes to turn the flames green for night racing.
Somthing rings a bell about copper in the exhaust pipes being illegal, I think it was originally aimed at the DIYers in the 50s to stop them making exhausts from copper pipe, but I am also pretty certain the real reason was copper in the exhaust creates Copper Disulphide gas which is toxic
Open headers, Little trick from the old days, make the tubes longer than you think, Run a spray aerosol down the length of the pipes, do one run down the strip, pull up ASAP, and check the paint marks, you should find the paint has burnt off so far, trim the pipes to where the paint has finished burning, this should give about the optimum length for open headers.

You are tight about the copper thing Ian S. Copper in an exhaust system makes some nasty chemical in the exhaust gasses, or so an exhaust expert told me. But my idea is only for the track, where just about anything goes eh!. Well for 12 odd seconds anyway....
