bugger....removing head core plugs on Rover V8

Post by adikt »

I have definatly buggered up trying to remove the screw thread allen plugs (the ones in the top of the head between the valve guides) I've tried using my stud extractor set on them to no avail :( I dont really want to drill, tap and helicoil it as it would be easier just to pick up some different heads!! What are these plugs made from? Would it be possible to weld a nugget on the end for some extra purchase? Just wondered if anyone else has had probems gettin them out? The engine is a 3.5 flapper. Thanks in advance

If it dont fit, force it. If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway!

Why do you need to remove them? I tried once and gave up.

They were that tight I decided they must be threadlocked in or something.

I think you'll have to drill & helicoil!

I win! Heheh. Managed to Weld a crankshaft bolt into the drilled plug and an old allen key into the other. Gave it lots of heat from a blow lamp and then gave it some beans. done! I will never ever, ever take out a coreplug out again without due reason
