tuned engine with LPG... yes or no!!!

Post by disco-v8 »

ok is it possible to run a tuned rover V8 on LPG????

if already heard problems that the valves can burn out on a normal V8 as LPG burns hotter, so what problems can happen if the engine is tuned???]

TUNED as in:-

differnt cam with differnt vavle timing and rhoads lifters etc?????

Hi
LPG can be used very succesfully on a tuned engine (le mans and btcc already have entries on lpg) however you will have even more difficulty "duel fueling" it if you do.
The valves burn, not because "LPG Burns hotter, it doesent, it burns cooler but (and this is why it can be a problem) it burns much slower, so when the exhaust valve opens it is still burning much harder than petrol so it burns the exhaust valves.
LPG has an octane rating around 110 to 115 lowerly and knock (detonation) resistant so it can take lots of compression, this in turn helps the slow burning of the fuel in three ways, to get the high compression you need a more compct cylinder head, so the flame front has less far to travel, the higher compression invariably means more turbulant mixture which will burn faster, and finally the compression means more heat so the charge is more energetic when you hit it with the soark so it will burn quicker and more compleetly so give off with more energy before the exhaust valve opens.
It all depends on what you want to achieve, how specialist the engine is and wether you also want to run it on petrol.

PS wouldnt this be better in the LPG section?
poppet valves rule!
