smoke!!!!!!! lots of it!!!!!

Post by tonydancer8 »

Help!
bought a sd1 with 3.9, rebuilt? engine. after 300 miles of use, it started to pink and turned day into night behind me!!!!. Ran rough so creeped home.
looked for obvious signs and eventually had heads skimed due to very faint maching mark accross oilway into cylinder. Rebuilt but exactly the same. Took car into local garage and they changed the oilrings even though there was no breakage etc. No signs of gasket probs so now pulling hair out!!!!! Starts 1st time, ticks over roughish but as soon as you touch the gas it pours smoke out! Even disconected brake vacuum pipe in case drawing fluid back. Help really needed!!! Is this a sign of liner failure?
Thanks,
Tony

Hi there! Sounds a bit intimidating!

Is the smoke black, white (or greyish) or blue?

Tony, IF you are running an GM180 Auto transmission and the smoke is white then the modulator valve on the rear of the transmission may have failed sucking ATF into the manifold.

Have you tried a compression test?, it might be a cracked piston.

Couple of things to look at

1) Check all spark plugs - it may just be one oiling up badly - then concentrate on that one cylinder
2) Remove Rocker cover and check valve stem seals are in place
3) Crank over engine and watch to see if valves look like they are moving correctly on suspect cylinder
4) Report back which cylinder is oiling and I bet someone on here could advise where to look for a bad gasket etc that would allow oil into the cylinder area.

thanks, everyone,
comp test between 165 175, all valve stem oil seals changed on first head removal. Someone has suggested using 20/50 oil, but why should it
have started after 2or 300 miles? will double check your ideas sat morning
before taking engine out again!!!!!!!
thanks again,
Tony.
ps as anyone got a holly 390 for sale as i also run a rover v8 powered dragster.

Is it that you've got a mismatched dipstick & tube so it's overfilled with oil?

Does it do it if you're down to well below the low mark on the dipstick?

BACK AGAIN!, drawn a blank with the smoking engine, so about to re-build one. Is there a differance between a early 3.9 crank and a 'serpentine' crank, or am i barking up the wrong drain pipe!

This came up on another thread a few days ago, have you got the positive crankcase ventilation set up properly? If not the pressure in the crancase can force oil down the valve guides and make for a very smokey engine, it happened on mine after a full rebuild and re-installing the venting system completely cured it.

Another thought, if you have got the vent system in place then it could also be a PCV valve the wrong way round or as on mine a brand new one that didn't work at all.
