Axle Narrowing - Any Recommendations
Hi,
I need to lose about 2.5 inches from each end of a Toyota Celica live axle (I know I could use another narrower axle but I've done lots with this one!)
Does anyone have any suggestions for doing this yourself OR possibly recommendations for people who can do this, preferably in the Hertfordshire area?
Cheers

Hauser will narrow your axle for about 150 notes I think. If you look up thier website they have some prices there. They are not too far from Herts.

The prices quoted and the prices charged bare no resemblance to each other, My Mosers ended up costing me nearly £400, ask Jay how much he was quoted for his axle to be narrowed and fitted to his Porsche, and the end price was hell of a lot more than he was quoted,

Been finishing off my latest project and got the V8 up and running today!
I've read elsewhere that it might be possible to get the original shafts shortened and the splines reground/extended. Any ideas??
Cheers

I went down this route to try and find somebody who would recut my splines, I tried a place in Tring that is a specalist gear cutter and grinder, laughed and said NO, I tried several machine shops and got the same reply, also, the shafts on the toyota axle are particualrly tough, I was rempted to anneal the shafts and get new splines hobbed onto the bare part of the shaft, but by the time I had got the shafts hobbed, and then the shafts hardened and then tempered, the price was heading towards the cost of Mosers, then there was no guarentee the shafts were tempered to the right spec, or be straight after this process, I wondered if the Toyota LiteAce had narrower shafts or the A46? corrolla, Fennsport may be able to help??

If you cut and shut the shafts as andy said, they will snap. Its not worth the agro of driving round thinking, whens it going to happen, cause it will, lol. Its a gud idea to cut and shut them to get it rolling. You could narrow the casing yourself but get proper shafts made. If you narrow the casing yourself you have to make sure its 100% as if its not you will wear bearings out very quickly. Also, use a chop saw, not a grinder, lol. There is a place up here in Darlington that re-spline your shafts but a little far to travel.
I do erratically, often with bits falling off.
A simple trick to see if your axle is straight (when it is out of the car) is to fit the wheels, sit them between a couple of bricks so they can't roll about, then slowly rotate the axle housing and watch if the wheels 'toe in' or toe out. You can use a tape measure between the wheels, or measure to a convenient solid object.leepop633 wrote:If you cut and shut the shafts as andy said, they will snap. I did my Sherpa axle on the hot rod, after welding four-bar brackets on, and found it was warped a fair bit, about 1/4"movement at the wheel rims, but a few runs of weld in strategic places on the casing pulled it back so the wheels never moved at all when the case was turned.
Or you could take the whole thing to a pro and pay them to sort it
