Which Volvo axle to use?

Post by HairbearTE »

I know many people have used volvo rear axles with some success in their V8 powered cars but which is best? There are many rear drive volvos and i guess the turbo 760's must have a beefy axle but the 240 was rear drive too wasn't it? Ideally I'd like an LSD and disc brakes, which volvo would such an axle be lurking under? Also, how do the volvo axles compare weight-wise to the strong US axles such as the 9" ford? Any help much appreciated.

Marcus,

get yourself an account on Turbobricks. They have a wedge of info on there.

Try here http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthrea ... light=axle.

Cheers,

Ian

Useful info on there, cheers. Not least of which was the revalation that the 760 uses an IRS. They do seem prefer the 8.8 ford unit though. Really what I want is an axle that will take some abuse (car is light so not excessively tough on axle) and dosen't weigh a ton or drain an enormous amount of HP. And has an LSD of course.

240 LSD is supposed to be rocking horse plop I thought. I can slap a "wanted" on the UK Volvo club site though if you like, save you having to register on it.

Mk2 Jag any good? Doesn't Ian S use a Celica axle (or some Toyota one)

yep I use a mid 80s celica LSD, and you think Vilvo 240lsds are hard to find, but it has survived more abuse than anything I can throw at it
