Cheap ones are Chinese copies- some work, some dont. The biggest issue is air leaks around the motor, or the central shaft is about 3 mm longer on some copies. This alters the position of a air regulator cone for a given number of control steps from the ECU, so the idle control can be poor or non ex...

Remapping the 14CUX

Things have been moving at a pace to crack the masonic world of 14CUX mapping, and its pretty much there for those that like to dabble. This post covers the real bits and bites: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=9&t=1325176&mid=56164&nmt=Instructions+to+change+fuel+maps+on+14CUX+Gri...

The set up is pretty odd- you put 12 volts on one end of the of the trigger coil- and the other end goes direct to the amethyst trigger wire. The diode goes from ground with the positive side to the trigger wire. This simply looks like it prevents any negative spikes from the reaching the trigger in...

The lucas amp simply replaces the points effectively, in so much it simply grounds the coil when it gets the trigger pulse from the pickup in the dizzy. The Amethyst draws very little current so you have to add a sink resistor between the trigger output and the 12 volt rail to bring the switch curre...

Ive been through my install with a fine tooth comb- I had considered the rotor arm position, so I cut a hole in the dizzy cap so I could see the rotor position, so I could ensure the rotor tip was near a pick up point across an effective 45' timing period- which is just fine. Ive scoped out the wave...

Aldon Amethyst

Has anyone managed to get one of these to work on the RV8? Ive had nothing but trouble trying to get it work with the lucas ignition amp and constant energy coil set up (1992). Its been back to Aldon twice with no fault found- but another owner of this set up is having the same issues as me. Basical...

AFM is a good culpret for over fueling- its output goes higher than it should, so the ECU thinks the car needs more fuel. You can do a basic test with a test meter. This came from Mark Adams of tornado systems origionally: Most airflow meter faults will cause the engine to run excessively rich. Howe...

The RoverGauge free software will give all error codes the ECU generates and stores, all sensor data, fuel map info, long and short fuel trim values, (for those with lambda's ) stepper position and control, fuel pump control, a data logging facility for live sensor data, and a Eprom copy facility. N...

The poor low speed performance is due to many factors, but the primary is that you are using a plenum chamber with a cam with more overlap. This means you get a certain amount of exhaust gas bounced back into the plenum at low speed during the valve overlap period that fouls the clean intake air, le...

I did a bit of expermenting on how to detect knock when altering the timing. Modern knock sensors are nothing more than crude microphones, so you can feed the output directly into a small amplifier ( Like you get in PC speakers). I used a Vauxhall sensor bolted to the head and a pair of "over ear" h...

Couple of points in this one. Firstly dont use a rising rate (ie boost type) fuel pressure regulator, it confuses the hell out of the ECU, that allready provides enough fuel enrichment. A bog standard 1:1 regulator will do just fine. Secondly, if you are using Lambda Sensors, the ecu will wind the m...
