Re: Bellhousing for Mazda mx5 box to Rover V8
Isn't the bell housing on the Mazda box integral with the main casing?

It's the clamp for the dipstick tube.

Re: Engine cleaning
Fleetwash (traffic film remover). Work it in neat with a stiff brush then was off with a 50/50 mix of fleetwash and boiling water.

Re: Rover V8 Engine Numbers Updated:
To add to my previous post, I pulled out one of the plugs today. It's brand new and the piston crowns are spotless so it's definitely never been run. In addition to this, I shone a torch around and I can see 4.6 painted (more like printed) on the piston crown. I also found a paper label on top of th...

Re: Rover V8 Engine Numbers Updated:
I've just got hold of a Thor engine with a mystery engine number V8TT14XX compression ratio is marked on block as 8.37:1 It's complete at the moment and looks standard in terms of all the bolt on stuff and it's manual (flywheel and big LR clutch). It's basically brand new, never run. Any ideas on ca...

Re: Rover V8 Engine Numbers Updated:
20211009_173034.jpg Does the S prefix denote a factory engine that was for service rather than destined for a new built car. Maybe to replace an existing engine under warranty? The rest of the number would just be a sequential identification rather than a number matching a specific VIN on a brand n...

Re: LT77 Gearbox Identification
The oval pad on the side of the main casing with the serial number stamped on it is only on suffix C boxes onwards. Suffix A and B have the number stamped underneath. Suffix A and B have smaller bearings on the first motion shaft so not as robust as the later boxes. Even a good one (if you can find ...

Re: LT77 Gearbox Identification
It's more likely to be a problem that missing completely. G17A would indicate 5 speed but I wouldn't put it past BL to have got the wrong number on it. If you can see it look at the small oval plate on top of the box closest to the gear lever (retained by 2 bolts that are aligned along the length of...

Re: Rover V8 cylinder head porting advice.
A somewhat overdue update here. I actually got the heads back from machining in October but due to other distractions, they were sat on a shelf for months before I got around to assembling them. No real issues putting everything together and here's an assembled head, looks just like a standard one. ...

I have Emerald on GEMS 4.6, works very well. I can't see why Thor would be any different.

Re: Lt77 remote gear lever
The remote rod is bolted on. There's a pin with a slotted head that passes up through the ball end on the remote rod on the box and goes through the selector rod on the box. It's retained with a nut on the top which is accessed through the round hole cast in the remote housing. You shouldn't need to...

Re: Rover V8 cylinder head porting advice.
I think the engine guy is playing it safe. He could probably press the guides out cold but if they drag on the head and the hole ends up oversized, the head would be scrap. He can see that I've spent a good few hours on the porting and maybe thinks machining is the lowest risk option.

Re: Rover V8 cylinder head porting advice.
I managed to get my heads dropped off for machining on Wednesday. The guy there said that the valve guides are difficult to remove by heating the head as this tends to cause the valve seats to fall out. To avoid this, he will machine the guides out to leave a very thin wall before drifting them out....

Re: Rover V8 cylinder head porting advice.
Yes, I actually used your images for reference thanks. I'm not expecting the finished job to be as good as a professional but from what I've read, there are some gains to be have if I concentrate on specific areas.
