Not actually an answer to the original question but if the basic issue is space on the passenger side of the engine bay, could you swap to a GEMS inlet and then rotate the top throttle body casting 180 degrees so it's on the drivers side. I'm pretty sure the bolt spacing will allow this.

if it is, then the low 1st gear should be easy to establish and might determine it's suitability for what you're using it.

It could be but isn't there a suffix letter at the end of the number? That would give a better indication of what the internals are. Ratios could well be different to SD1 but knowing BL, they probably aren't.

In a work no, R380 is heavier duty so the gears are wider and the bearings are bigger. Unless the R380 was in a pretty shocking state I think you'd struggle to find an LT77 in better conditions. The box does look huge but then strength generally doesn't come in small packages. If you've got the space to fit it and the determination to do it, it's got to be a worthwhile swap.
