My kitcar suddenly will not engage 5th gear. All other gears work fine. As you try to select you get this severe grinding noise and it pushes out of gear.

How do I adjust the gearbox remote to try and solve this problem, or is there anything else I can to do? I am just hoping I don't need to remove the engine and gearbox, so you would make me very happy if there is a solution.

I have read a few things which talk about removing the bottom plate which I can't do as no access to this area.

The gearbox is an LT77 on a Rover V8 3.5.

If all the gears apart from fifth engage without problem then I doubt it is a selector problem.

Does it engage when the engine is off and the car is stationary?

Probably a fault like the fifth gear has come off the layshaft, drain the oil and if metal comes out then you need to remove the gearbox to repair or replace.

I have managed to sort this problem in that the remote rubber bushes where worn but what I also needed to do was add a few large washes to push the remote further back thereby allowing the gear stick to not foul on its surround. I think that making sure the gearstick is totally free to move the maximum amount in its housing is key and I would imagine that plenty have replaced the remote rubbers and still suffered the same gear sellection problems, when all they needed to do was to add a few washes to push the remote further back allowing additional movement of the gearstick.
