simply wiring alternator to battery

how would i simply do it its an old lucas alternator off v8 is it just a case of the two screw connectors going from positive to negative on battery??, only problem is dno which is positive and which is negative

The alternator case is -ve. So battery return is through the alternator bracket, then either through the engine block to battery -ve or you attach a thick cable from the alternator bracket to chassis like I did to make sure of a nice low ohm link!

One will go to battery +ve, the other should go through a small bulb (charge light) to battery +ve.

You really need to identify the type of alternator. For instance if it's a 11AC type then it will need a external regulator like a 4TR box. Later types just have a postive to the battery and another smaller connector to the IGN warning light. The earth is provided through the body of the machine.
