Hello I`m new here!

Just before the forum changes I was asking for advice about my LPG system, now I think I have a head gasket leaking! I bought a sheddy range rover 3.9 EFi which blew its top hose on the way home. I think its overheated and now the heads have to come off after I`ve done compression tests etc...

My question is. What manual or book would people recommend and does anyone have any tips. I have done many 4 and 6 cylinder cars in the past, but have not had to do a V8 as yet. The cheapskate in me wants only to do the affected gasket, is this ok?

Is there anywhere else about 7 litres of water can be going within 300 miles?!

I am not aware that you can buy the gaskets in single always a pair, only aroubd £32 anyway.

You can buy single head gaskets no problem from specialists like real steel and v8 tuner. I would recommend you do both of them anyway. I would probably get a top end gasket set as your going to have to touch most of them on top anyway to get at the heads.
You could have a split hose or radiator but if the system is pressurised enough to blow the top hose I would think the head gasket is a fairly safe bet. A compression test will soon tell you.
As for manual the range rover classic manual from Haynes would do you or look on ebay for the OEM manual on CD.

Really I am after a book that will cover the engine in detail perhaps with a view to further mods after sorting the head gaskets out. not so keen on a range rover manual as the engine will be going in a p6. the rusty range rover minus engine etc. will be up for grabs if anyones interested I want a shade over £200

fair enough but the range rover manual is about the only one your going to find with detailed take apart and put together instructions. There are no manuals that I am aware of that just deals with the rover engine on its own like you get for the american engines. There are books on the engine but they aren't detailed repair manuals and don't show you how to do stuff more just go on about what you can do to tune them.

you have a point there. i dont think you can go far wrong either the rangerover manuals or the haynes car manual

Being a 3.9, you could have a cracked block, and changing the head gasket won't make any difference to that. Best think is to take the heads off and inspect what's going on.

you will have to have a good set of eyes as the pourus blocks crack around the water jackets on the cylinders. 3.9 blocks arent prone to cracking. its the 4.0 and the 4.6 you need to watch for. Also if you remove one head and have it skimmed, the inlet manifold will not fit properly depending on how much you skim them. same goes if you have a lot skimmed off both. you need to skim the plenum too.
