hi im building my dream car and i want a v8 in it but i want it to be a good powerfull engine for not a load of cash, can anyone help.
its a kit car im building the donor car is a mr2 but i want a rover v8 in it but when i look on ebay uk there is so many i dont know which to buy i like the sound of supercharger can you all help and what sort of stuff should i be looking for

first thing you should be asking yourself is,

what is the car going to be used for?
every day? fun? summer etc?
if its everyday forget the v8 route as the price of fuel and the economy of the v8 aint for you,

next what budget have you for an engine,
you say you want an engine for not a lot of cash? how much is not a lot of cash?

And if you want loads of power - there are a lot of cheaper routes to power than working over a Rover

Chev for instance gives a lot more HP for the same ££££££££££

thanks for ur replys it will be used for the road on weekends not loads im thinking max of £1000 if anyone can fing a link on ebay or else were of something good i will be well happy

My recommendation is if you have a £1000 then stick with the Rover V8 and forget the supercharger

Condition is all important, but I would go for the largest capacity you can find for your money.

Just re read this

What gearbox are you going to mate it to? If the original MR2 unit you will run out of revs quickly as the MR2 engines would rev to 8000 - most standard Rover engines run out of puff at 6000

On another group, someone is raving about this Chev pushrod V-8. 7 litres?
Reckons it's better than an E39 BMW M5. But surely there must be a snag?
Like dreadful fuel consumption?

im here to learn so what gear box would fit the mr2 with a v8 in

I was wondering when the subject of transmission would come up.

Which model of MR2 are we talking about, they were all transverse engine, havent a clue whether the rover could be mated to the toyota trans and whether it would be strong enough for a decent rovers torque.

There was somebody on here last year with a metro project with rear transverse rover V8 so the archives might turn up something, anybody remember the guys name?

What ever you do will need a lot of engineering. it's not going to be a bolt in!!!

If you stick pretty well any V8 in an MR2 chassis you are going to upset the handling, the MR2 engine is a very light engine, even an early P6 rover with all the ancileries stripped off is going to be about 150lb heavier, plus you will need a suitable gearbox to take the torque, another 40 or 50lb think of driving the existing car around with large 2 bags of sand in the boot, it will be interesting . You could look for one of the Italian V8s, which are very light and some have gear boxes for transverse fitment, but you won't get one for 1k.
Sorry to be a party pooper but I think you need to look for somthing lighter and simpler.
