Local Motor factors, depending on what pump base thread you have, Renault 5 fit,
Personally I would be fitting a remote filter, then you can fit the filter away from any possibility of impact, from either suspension travel or foreign bodies hitting it

I had exactly this problem, and the only sure fire fix was to fit a remote takeoff plate to the end of the pump, and use a remote filter.

I'm using an adaptor block that rotates the filter out of the way of the diff (it points towards the chassis rail), not sure where it came from, was fitted to an engine I bought with a series conversion adaptor plate.

Would love to post some pictures but can't get it to work at the moment.
Easy way to post pics is download your pics to Photobucket, then post direct onto here.

I used a Sierra cosworth filter. Same dia but about half the height of the range rover filter. get one from local motor factor.
Worked fine for me, but (and i'm thinking aloud!) Maybe as it is shorter with I presume the same filter medium it would cause a restriction and so lower oil pressure which could I suppose be an issue on older/ higher mile engines.

The filter off an S4 volvo (Halford HOF241) is about 3/4 the length of the rover item and has the same thread. Worth a trip to Halfords and check out different filters. Also the FRAM PH2857A is 3.5" long.
Provided you change it more frequently the shorter filter should be ok.
