I have a VDO oil pressure gauge and would like to remove the glass covers and discard it. You can not see the gauge very well due to the glare off the glass. The gauge will be cover by a polycarbonate sheet(which does not glare) and you will not be able to see the outer steel case either. It appears that the cover may come off if I grip the heck out of it with some pliers and twist.

Sounds like a stupid question, but I wanted some gauges, not the glass.

It depends how it's held on, some have a ring that's completely crimped over in a press, and doesn't unscrew/flip off. Might be able to slice that, and stick it back with Tiger Seal, but would have a small join. I did that when making custom faces for bike clocks, but the crimped ring was lower down and not so visible. Opened up an oil gauge just recently, an old Smiths one, the bezel/ring had little tangs that could be tweaked to open it up.

Fully crimped retainers/bezels can be removed and the way to avoid damage to them is by using a jubilee clip around the bezel (protected with masking tape) to clamp it whilst using a small screwdriver to ease the crimp back off the rim, slacken and rotate the clip as you work around to avoid the part that holds the worm drive. IYSWIM.

Assembly as removal but in reverse as they say.
