rv8 into mk3 cortina

i've been harping on about it for years,started gathering the parts to do something
i have engine and gearbox in stock at the moment
its a 3.5 rv8 efi,i might change to carbs though
gearbox is a t5 from a 2wd sierra cosworth
i have been wondering about the rear axle though
i was going to try the ford atlas,but have been looking at jag rear axle,bmw rear axle and now volvo ones too.
the build is as close to a scrapheap challenge as i can get it,no special conversion kits,just oldskool graft,thats the plan for now
who would be the volvo rear axle specialist on here?
i was told a 940 rear axle might be a good one to go for,they have a locker system similar to a lsd

The volvo is pretty strong, sherpa is pretty much bulletproof but may be too low geared. Toyota Celica has a very strong rear end, the Atlas is pricey and not too happy about V8 torque.

If you can get one fitted the Salisbury axle from an MGB is really strong. But the 1800cc ratio is crap at 3.9 The MGB V8 axle is 3.07:1 but a refurbed V8 axle is gonna cost around 500 notes from MGB Hive..
The shafts for the 1800 and the V8 are all the same and cheap as chips. If you have enough gears to run an 1800 MGB axle you can just weld it up and it will be a good cheap axle for a starter. If you decide to go that way I can possibly donate an 1800 Salisbury axle to the cause if you want to collect it FOC. ?? It might need an anti clonk kit fitted, but they are only about 20 quid from MG club.

My mate had a 2.3 V6 Mk4 cortina that came with an atlas axle fitted as standard, when he fitted a 2.8 V6 all he did was fit the crown wheel and pinion from a 3 litre capri.

4 different axles fitted to the 3/4/5 cortinas, English, Koln, normal Atlas and the HeavyDuty Atlas, the first 3 are not really worth considering, the HD is basically the same as found as the 2.8 capri so there is a LSD available, HD axles were found under all V6s and most 2.0 estates, with a atlas and a 3.5. RV8 I dont think you will have any problems as long as you have a LSD and poly bush it, I think you have to leave out one set of bushes to keep the rear compliant, I will check elsewhere.
As long as your car is not tubbed and running silly wide sicky tires you wont have a problem, especially as I know there are a few capris running 11s and escorts running 10s on relativly standard Atlas axles

the hd atlas would be nice allright,but the rally boys have them making top prices
fine if you are rallying,showcar and all that.i'm not,so unless i pick one cheap,and i haven't so far, then i will be ruling them out
i did get a tip from an old garage man about putting a second set of bearings into an english axle on the inside of the shafts,making them fully floating,so i might attempt that with the cortina axle ,when i find the car.
