valve guides+porting

i have 2 sets of sd1 heads 
is it worth machining back the valve guide(where it sticks out in to the ports)
i have access to the kit to port and polish the heads(wont polish the inlet ports just the exhaust)
how far can i open up the exhaust ports?
will match the inlet manifold to the heads as req
any help would be good
