I need to use the Rover P6 front cover due to clearance issues, but not keen on the rope oil seal! do Rover do a later cover with the same layout as the P6 but with a better oil seal? Thanks Rob

Rob.
The SD1 front cover has a better oil pump and later oil seal and bolts straight on.

Hello Rob,

The oil pump gears for the P6 front cover are shorter than those for the SD1 and all subsequent Rover V8 engines with camshaft driven oil pumps.

As a result gears for both covers cannot be inter changed. You can buy the deeper gears for the P6 cover which also come with a spacer plate to fitting between the oil pump cover and the front (timing) cover.

If you already have a P6 fromt cover and the oil pump gears, distributor etc then keep that system. It works fine, served my original 3.5 for 33 years and 203,000 miles.

Hi Ron,
I will be using the hotwire efi, so would it not be best for me to use a sd1 cover, oil pump to fit the hotwire dizzy?
Thanks Rob

The water pump will fit the SD1 cover but if you fit an SD1 cover then a solution is to fit an SD1 dizzy also to get over the oil pump drive issue highlighted by PoverP6B

Sounds like the set up I have in the GT40

But no idea on which dizzy and oil pump (Dizzy has been drilled for the extra oil feed and braided hose fitted

If you need to have a look / photos and ask more questions from knowledgable people on there let me know

Hi Ian
I have no room for the P6 water pump! the engine is too close to the bulkhead! but it does use a P6 front cover and a special P6 pump blanking plate with outlet. Hence the reason for wanting to upgrade the cover but still keep the P6 water pump fitment.
Thanks

Bulkead probably easier to modify than the parts. make an inspection hatch with whater bulge you need to get the parts fitted. - That's the way we do it in GT40 land

I believe you can swop the dizzy drive BUT by the time you have bought a new gear/joggle drive it probably would be cheaper to get a secondhand efi dizzy.
