My inlet manifold has some sort of metal deflector attach to a black plastic spacer (for heat insulation I assume). One for each carb. This goes in-between the carb and the manifold. I guess the metal air deflector should aim the air down into the manifold? I can't see it on any parts list.

Does it look like this?

if they are a disc with 4 or 5 holes in about 3/8 in diameter or a effectively a semi circular hole their best orientation is in the bin, they are carb restriction plates intended to limit the engine to 90 bhp . Actually there was a chap from Norway (I think) on here looking for a set a couple of months back he may actually buy them off you.

No if there is a "tongue" in the middle that is bent slightly and sticks down then it wouldn't be either of the ones mentioned above. I have seen them on some SU's before but cant find any pics and cant think what they were on, may have been metro A+ or something. Tbh I cant help much anyway but I know what you mean! It may be good for turbulance even if it does slow the flow slightly, unless it is a race engine I wouldn't worry too much and believe they point down into the manifold as you thought.

These were found in the manifold that came off my P6 lump.

*edit- Mine were found with the tongue pointing down

Quagmire, they are the ones, what do they do? I forgot to note the direction of the diversion!

They are intended to improve atomisation of the fuel and increase turbulance up to half throttle ie at cruise, personally I would chuck them in the bin if you are interested in performance.
