Who to do my engine build....

I've never heard of him and I did a bit of research a couple years back on buying a new Chevy engine.

Ive not spoken to him yet, im ringing him next week, as im totally new to the chevy V8 engine. Im looking to put a small block chevy v8 in a mk1 capri im restoring. My aim is to have on the road for next summer, but as confident i am tinkering im not confident or have enough time to rebuild an engine. So im looking to have it done for me, and looking for guidance as to what would be suitable. Im looking for around the 300bhp with a real lopey tick over, i love the noise, and i want something still driveable and reliable. Im looking to keep things as cheap as possible within reason and up to £3k very top to spend. So any input advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ade

There's a stripped down LS1 Roush on Eurodragster at the moment which is "99%" complete for a grand. Purports to be 550bhp and much lighter than a smallblock. Might be worth giving the guy a ring.

Wow...that is alot less money than i was looking to spend...i guess id better get on with finding out more about that type of engine as ive done nothing but look at the small block chevy....told you i was new to this stuff! lol cheers

For a start they're not reborable. If it's worn you need a new block. It could be a bargain but you need to know about ls engines in some depth before you dive in.

This is why im being cautious and wanted to commission a build as at least i know the money i spend has some sort of guarantee and come back on, i dont pretend to have a vast knowledge on engines just the basics really.
Also it seems the chevy block is tried tested and pretty hard wearing, though i will look into this type of v8 more as i had only looked at the chevy and rover v8 so far.

Adrian,
The 350 Chevy ad does not give any detail of spec of the engine and could be just a basic 350 with all the dress up parts but does appear to have alloy heads, ask for the full engine spec.
Another point is that the 350 chevy is physically quite large and heavy even with the alloy heads, the 302 ford is quite a bit more compact and with alloy heads probably similar in weight to the original ford 3L V6 which is important in respect of the way the car will handle.
The Ford 302 would be a lot easier to fit and can easily produce 300-350 BHP in fast road tune with good drivability and the T5 gearbox will be just a bolt on, 302 capris were built in South Africa and called Piranas.
If the car is mainly for road use don't go too wild on the cam, it's not necessary and you will soon get fed up with no bottom end power and high fuel consumption.

For the ultimate build I would go to Peter Knight (Knight Racing services) or ICE Automotive....wont be cheap, but will be to a very high quality

Peter Night's work is first class, also a nice bloke to deal with very straight forward chap.
For your budget you could look at one of these

Also Eliot has a complete and running 350 (very low milage) in his shed (on injection with the loom sorted to run stand alone ) which he could probably be persuaded to sell if you waved cash at him, I think it is about 325 bhp spec motor.

1600 odd quid sees you a new Goodwrench crate engine anyway doesn't it? That'll make what, 250BHP - decent intake, headers, carb, ignition system and so on would probably warm that up a treat....drop in a cam and some rockers and you'd be well on your way....and that'd be brand new throughout.
OK, so it'd have iron heads and be fairly weighty - but it's not like alloy heads are expensive either these days
