Hello,

I'm having a look over my friends engine, its an older style P6 bottom end and the heads casting number ERC 0216 which i think are SD1 but the spark plugs are the short reach type, heads have been ported and fitted with uprated single springs. Something doesnt seem right.

Is this correct???

Thanks Paul.

Hello Paul,

If the spark plugs are the short reach type and assuming they extend as they should to just entering the combustion chamber,...then the heads most certainly are pre SD1,..ie either P5B or P6B heads.

The spark plugs are the give-a-way. All other Rover V8 heads use long reach plugs only.

Paul,

Whilst Ron is correct re P5/6 heads it is possible that the heads have been changed to the later SD1 type but the old short reach plugs have been used in error.

Or in some fit of porting someone may have opened the chambers up as far as they will go around the spark plug hole resulting in too much plug in the chamber with long reach plugs.

To be certain take a plug out you should be able to see all the thread and compare that to either type of long or short reach plugs.

I had this problem with an early engine I had out of a range rover.

It had late heads with long reach threads but some numpty had put short plugs in and the remaining thread was caked up with Carbon. Possibly what you have here.

when I had the heads ported and what hav' ya, I had the guy clean the threads up with a tap. Don't force a plug through it without cleaning the threads first.
