Custom Propshaft

Well, going to need a prop to connect my LT77 to 7.5" Cossy LSD, as there is a flange both ends I'm guessing I need a 2 piece as there is no forgiving spline to slip in to.

I dont have anything for it yet but plan to make it myself then get it balanced, the sierra ones dont have sliders so what is best to use- I'm assuming the LT77 has a pretty standard flange size so what are my options for donors?

Hi TC,

I'd use a SD1 propshaft for the LT77 end & a Sierra prop for the rear you should be able to either fit one to the other or retube using the appropriate ends.

Its just finding an SD1 prop...! TR7's etc prob easier- TVR ones might actually have the right ends as think they used cossy diffs and LT77's for a while before going to T5 boxes or am I wrong?

Yes, you're right the earlier TVR's used LT77 and ford diffs.

You might try speaking to a couple of custom prop manufactures? They may sell you the ends to weld your self.

Had one made recently, to my design and thought it was a very reasonable cost. (Didn't fancy welding it myself as I didn't want to test the strength of my hip whilst launching of the line  )

Early TR7's had a 4 speed box and used a Marina style rear axle which presumably had an Austin background. Can't see Ford being involved with BL.

5 speed TR7's used the lt77 box and an axle similar to the rovers but narrower, with a different pcd and smaller diameter shafts. Diffs are swoppable though. Mines a 2.84 :)

Hi TC,

Yes your'e right about the TVR prop but they may be hard to find. I also doubt the length would work out right. I know Rimmers have SD1 prop's in stock at £57.50 inc VAT.

Its not that costly to have one made with the correct ends, and it will need to be balanced aswell, :) rich

Tom
Try a Jag XJ6 or early Daimler Shaft.
These have flanges at both ends as well as a sliding joint at the gearbox end.
The flange is the same as the LT, as is the bolt pattern.
cheers

Thanks for all the replies guys, would MG be another option? Only as there are a lot more bits for them than TR's and SD1's, if not I will look at Jag bits but prob stay away from Landy ones as quite small diameter and heavy, plus I doubt the balance would be near as good as a car one!

Have a chat with Bailey Morris. They made my Van one.
I took in a scrap SD1 prop (with CV at both ends) to provide the donor CV joint, but they had some brand new ones in stock!
They know their onions.

Thanks Chris, I gave them a ring and the guy gave me a guide price of about £180 + VAT, I haven't seen a standard SD1 prop and the pic in Rimmer bros site isn't too clear- are they a single piece with slider? If so I will order one and modify the rear end to take a cossy flange.

The SD1 prop doesn't have a slider as such. I think it's all part of the CV joint. I think both of the joints have a slider built-in in fact because you can move the prop tube in its entirety.
