Belt and braces way is to pack the gears with vaseline and bolt the cover back on. Fill the new filter with oil and put the rest in the engine. Prime with a drill at around 2000 rpm.
Works everytime for me

forgive me for being a newbie, but why vaseline?

Hi,the vaseline provides a point of suction for the pump which in turn draws the oil through the galleries and into the pump and then around the engine.
You do,nt have to drain the oil either after the pump is primed because the vas just breaks down to nothing in the sump.
Hope this answers your question.

I'm sure a RIP will have some, although they do prefer to dry-bum you...

You don't need to pack it like a bearing, a smear on the walls and the gear tips will do it. Low melting point grease does it as well, we have a grease nipple on the pump cover so I can give it a quick squeeze with a grease gun if it has sat for too long. Works every time.
