Auto box

Hello everyone, I took the Consul for a drive today and was haveing a think about the gear box. When the engine is cold the box needs to be in the 2nd position rather than the 'D' position to go forward, when it gets a bit warmer it will drive in the 'D' position. The gears wont drop into top gear although it did twice. I was thinking is there something I am over looking that would cure the problem before I start takeing the box out to fit the replacement box. Any advice would be helpful as I am a bit challenged on the mecanics side of things.Cheers Tony.

It's a b/warner 35.

Hi,
Have you connected , and correctly adjusted, the kick down cable ?
Is the oil level correct ? (level should be checked with the engine running, box in park)

I did the oil level but dont know about the kick down cable. I wont be able to look at it untill the weekend or even the weekend after, I'm not even sure where to look but I have a trusty Rover manuel. So would the kick down cable stop it from droping it to top gear. Also are the cables easely available.

Hi, I also have a BW35 on my Granada 3.9.
I was advised my a gearbox reconditioner that a kickdown cable MUST be fitted to the BW35. If the kickdown cable is adjusted correctly it will open a valve in the box, as soon as you begin to press the fast pedal the kickdown cable should start to operate. the further you press the fast pedal down the further the valve opens. Run this `box without a kickdown cable and you will ruin it.
I wanted to use my BW35 without a kickdown and was told about the above, my advise take note of the above and do not use this gearbox without a kickdown cable. It may not be adjusted properly but it MUST be fitted. Mike-b :)

On a B-W 35, it's not just a kickdown cable - it's the only way the box knows where the throttle is. Other boxes use a vacuum connection for this. If the cable is broken or incorrectly adjusted, the box will change up etc at the wrong speeds. But more to the point, the hydraulic pressure will be wrong leading to damage to the clutches and brake bands through them slipping. It's no bad idea to add a crimp etc to the cable to set a minimum pressure in event of throttle linkage wear.

I agree with all of the above statements regarding the importance of having the kickdown cable fitted, and correctly adjusted, all I would add however is that if it isn't fitted it will change up far too early, not delay the changes to the point where they don't happen at all.

Check and set the fluid level, being sure to use the correct type of fluid, and then set the kickdown cable, then see what's happening.
