I am running a Mallory 6AL and have a progressive limiter available but everyone and Mallory say you cannot use an aftermarket limiter with a CD system.

If the limiter clamps the coil neg what harm would this do to the control unit ?

I need to use the limiter for safety not driving to it so it should be rarely used.

Any ideas gratefuly recieved

The 6AL has its own built in limiter which you program via plug in chips. http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ign ... ntrol.aspx or is it actually the 6 you have?

Meant to say yes CD ignitions can get damaged if you use a limiter after it. The limiter itself is unlikely to survive either since the MSD ignitions put out something like 50v as well.

So the unit must supply a pulsed + not grounding the - like normal systems, so I could lift the negative side of the coil with the limiter plus some electronics not creating any load on the Mallory unit.

You have kinda lost me here am afraid. CDI doesn't use the - of the car it has its own power supply so whether you mess with the + or the - you are interupting its power supply and this will damage the capacitors. It also doesn't matter if your on the + or the - 50V is 50V and your limiter will get damaged. CDI ignitions give a big fat spark but they are unfortunately pretty fragile. Lots of things damage them including simply pulling a plug lead off.
