Anyone considereing a manual gearbox replacement or Automatic to manual conversion might want to consider the Toyota Supra W58 gearbox.

They are light - around 30 kg, absolutely bullet-proof and pretty cheap second hand (around $350 - $400 USD here in RSA), plus the ratios are in line with the Sporting nature of the donor vehicle.

Any Japanese used engine importer would be able to source one.

In our neck of the woods, the Toyota Cressida Gearbox (similar to the W58, but not as robust) is ubiquitous - it is used for just about all conversions - there are firms that specialise in making bellhousings that will adapt it to fit V8 engine (Ford and Chev), Japanese diesels etc.

Just a thought - use it, don't use it!

Yep there area couple of people who have used/using them, me included, getting a bit harder to find these days, but I have sourced a spare last week as mine is starting to make horrible noises!!!!
Im also looking along the lines of a IS200 box, that way you can get a 6 speed box for reasonable money, I have a strange feeeling some of the internals are interchangable between the 2 boxes, so Im now thinking Supra box with a is200 5th & 6th bolted on the back. unfortunatly I cant get any difinative answer to the strength of the IS200 box, the only reply I have had was to tell me they wont handle 600hp like the w58

Are the Aussies the only ones making bellhousings for this combination any more?

Have an R154 sat in my garage

Ive never heard of the W-series holding 600bhp.

The R-154 are capable, but not indestructable.

I was always under the belief the W-series was more like a 400bhp box, and the R-154 500, give or take.

Obviously dependant on many other factors. I recently sold what R-154's I had to a drift guy. He had bought a Chaser which had twisted the input shaft apparently.

Although obviously a drift car gets serious abuse !

The above boxes can still be bought cheaply, you'd jsut need to find them in smaller local breakers who dont have any idea how good they are.

Im interested in this thread as i can get these supra boxes for under reasonable cost but just need to buy a bell housing. The R154 apparently can take some big stick...

Give us the part number/model number of the box (T21 for example) and I will check in SOuth Africa. There are some blokes there who may have those bellhousings.
