Starter motors again :-(

Have now come across another problem with the range rover 1.4KW starter,
it sits too close to the steering shaft, and the coupling hits the solenoid and tries pushing it towards the engine while going lock to lock

Image

i dont want to go back to a stock SD1 starter with the solenoid under neath,
do any of the rover v8 engines use a solenoid under the starter as per sd1 BUT 1.4kw?

we are hoping when we lift the gearbox today it may give us a bit more clearance, and we are also looking at spacing the steering rack off the crossmember by 5mm to give a bit more clearance from the shaft to solenoid,

The starter (there were two types) for the P6B has the solenoid underneath, while all the starters for the 4 wheel drives have the solenoids on the side.

yes mate correct,
there was rumours that the sherpa (ldv) v8 had a 1.4kw starter BUT with a solenoid underneath,
never ever found out if this was true or not yet,
asked at a few motor factors, they were not sure,
BUT if i ordered one i had to buy it as its a special order and can't be sent back a lot of money to risk getting a possible wrong starter (£150)

Im using one of these.

The original starter wouldnt turn over my 4.6 properly with 10.8:1 CR
They are lightweight too.

where does the solenoid sit when fitted mate?
have you any pics of it installed please?

The solonoid is below and has to be on the MGB as space is very tight.
Being a gear reduction starter I can use a tiny red top 20 battery which turns the engine over much faster than the original.
Sorry no pics at the moment.

does the drive gear still throw out as per old style starters mate?

asked for some end shots of the starter.

The gear reduction one for the chevy is clockable, i.e. you have several options of where you want the solenoid to end up. You may find yours is similar.
