Steel rockers

I have started to have a close look at the engine in my G27 to see whats what - I fancy a set of outrigger rocker shaft supports so thought I would have a quick look under the oil filler to see how they would fit.

The rockers that I what met with did not look familiar so I grabbed an old head to look at a rocker to compare - not at all alike - I got a magnet and the rockers are steel.

They would appear to be the Steel Federal Mogul rockers - The spring retainers are also steel looking - but any suggestions how to tell whether they are different from standard? and any knowledge of how good these Mogul rockers are.

steel rockers are a common after market replacement and in some minds are a tunning item as they are supposedly stronger although heavier. Federal is a reputable manufacturer as well so I wouldn't think you will have any problems with them, unlike some of the cheap chines ones that are on the market. They also differ in that they aren't handed like the alloy ones are. Spring retainers are steel standard so not sure what you mean by them.

On the retainers I have read that the early double spring ones are steel but the later single ones are a sintered material that is inherently weak so looking for clues as to how to tell a sinter from steel.

I guess if I have double springs which I cannot see at the moment - will remove a rocker cover tomorrow - that will be the obvious sign.

Ok I see what you mean but to be honest a quick look at wont tell you if they are sintered or billet as they are all machined.
