Hi all, i am from this point confused....
have a early RV8 from a range rover classic with what i think is a P6 front cover.

I am trying to replace the oil pump gears but i am at a loss..the dizzy is the early type that slots over the shaft, but the bigger gears are too big and the oil pump cover cant be fitted, so i bought the smaller type gears..these are too small the oil pump cover can be fitted but the gears slip down so much that the dizzy wont engage the shaft??
am i missing something a shim perhaps, there is a plate that fits between the cover and the timing cover but this is useless at this point.
any ideas?
thanks for looking.

Bit confused here, the big gears should be sd1 and have a tooth on the end the small gears should be P6 and have a slot on the end. There are longer type gears for the P6 and require a spacer between the cover and the pump base. Your pic only shows you have a P6 water pump as the top of the sd1 and p6 covers are pretty much identical. If the plate your on about is actually a spacer then you will have to get the proper gears to fit or fit standard short p6 gears without it. You can also get plates that are like sheet metal with holes in, these are supposedly to slightly improve oil flow/pressure and reclaim a scored pump base. More pics of the parts and or details would be handy here.

Have added a few more pics of the gears etc, the bigger gears look like they are the ones i need but cant get the cover on, and with the spacer the gear flops about in the pump, is there a smaller spacer/shim available?

the smaller p5/p6 gear is far too small as you can see in the pics, not much room for the camera but you can see what i mean...
thanks for the help.

My guess is that you have an SD1 cover there and the way to correct your issues is with SD1 pump gears and an SD1 dizzy wobble drive.
Is there a fuel pump connection on the side?

Hi Garry,
The big gear in your pic has the same slot drive as the smaller gear and is from an oil pump upgrade kit, which (with a spacer plate) is used to convert a P6 front cover to accept the taller gears - like mine:-
When you say you can't get the pump cover on, is it fouling on the gears? Looking at my pic, the gears should stand proud of the housing by 2 to 5 thou. Then when you fit the gasket and cover you should have around 1 to 4 thou end-float on the gears.
Bit more difficult to check this in-situ, but if you get a priming tool onto the gear slot you'll get a feel for how freely the gears rotate. As long as you haven't packed them with Vaseline!

As said both those gears are P6 one being an upgrade kit. if the small ones are too small big ones too big the I would say you have an sd1 cover.

the space for the fuel pump is blanked off (no cover)
the bigger gears are too big even with the gasket the is still 3-4mm of gap.
maybe a sd1 cover then...
ill have too see what i can find.
thanks for the help everyone.

SD1 pump gears are easy to come by and cheapish:

The problem is you'll need an SD1 style distributor with a 'wobbly' slot drive. These obviously cost a bit new, and old ones from a scrappy might be dead (especially the electronic OPUS ones)

If you wanted to you can cut the tooth off the P6 distributor and use the later SD1 drive gear. Common practice for anybody running mallory kit as these all come for the P6 engine and not the SD1.
