Site access to today - hack

Just to let you know:

The web hosting company has been subjected to mass hacks. Someone is driving traffic to various pharmacy type sites, and is hacking site en masse to do that.

I've cleaned out as much crap as I can find at the mo, Tony is away so we can't go to a clean backup just yet - so please bear with us, there may be more probs, or probs from things I've not spotted yet.

If you manage to read this but subsequently can't get in, you can mail me on bill *AT* alleykat.co.uk

You will have to re log-in I think, but should only have to do that once.
Please don't mail me about that, we know that one - any other 'spots' may help though.

cheers all.

It all seems so pointless; they're trying to raise traffic and create loads of links to particular sites, to boost srch engine position. The engines will probably realise this and ban or penalise them anyway.... :?

So yeah, bloody annoying.
On the flipside, we had a hack where I work but they just left a msg on the home page, although they had the keys to the whole shebang. They highlighted a weakness in the site without wrecking it ('tweren't me that built it, and I didn't know the site well then). So they actually did us a favour and I found zillions of holes wanting fixes.

O well. Reckon I've got it cleaned, but best to a restore just in case I missed a bit!

I couldn't log in yesterday until I cleared my browser of cookies, then it was no problem, but I see that even if I tick "keep me logged in" I still need to log in each time I visit, which is not a big issue.

Great site by the way!!

Hi Load, you shouldn't have to do that - probs a cookie setting in your browser.

We seem to be stable at the moment, but if there's another flood of attacks from the spammer/hackers, things may go wrong again. Think this happened last night, after the first fix, there was a duff spell.

Bill,

It's running fine now and at a good speed although I couldn't get on at about 9AM and was getting a critical error message.

I can't seem to get in through the front page. I have to take a link from a pm alert in my hotmail inbox and that gets me in fine. Very odd.

Alley Kat,
Thanks for the reply. All my other sites I go on were behaving OK and now this one is behaving fine now. I am in a place with crappy internet, so it may well be related.

Cheers,

John
