Drop base filter restriction

I have been taking a close look at the drop base filter thats fitted to the 390's on the two cars that I have and wondering how much of a restriction they are causing - on the Dutton the top of the filter is being dented by the float bowl breather the lid is that close.

On the G27 the Wildcat Spider manifold is quite a high rise a a nice deep filter will not fit under the bonnet - I have removed the bonnet bulge at the moment - but was hoping to refit but looking at this I really think that its causing a big restriction. A 3" filter or a flat base filter will means a significantly bigger bonnet hump.

My car does not run choke butterflys so I was considering taking the carb off and milling the choke horns off and doing some epoxy work to flow the carb entry.

Any thoughts on these issues?

Cheers

Andrew,

The minimal clearance to the lid on a dropped base filter does cause flow problems.

Whether you can modify the carb in the way suggest I don't know.

Real Steel are very knowledgable on Holley carbs, alternatively you could ask your question on the US British V8 Forum where they will have more information on the subject.

Alternatively you could fit a Top Hat to the carb with one or two remote cone type filters depending on your flow requirements.

Hope you get some answers.
