Fuel Pump Question

I'm looking at using a higher pressure fuel pump to feed the Edelbrock on my 4.6 SD1 to replace the weedy standard AC Delco in tank pump (which only delivers 3 psi). I'm considering a Facet Red Top pump. I need to deliver about 5-6 psi fuel pressure.

I believe the best place to mount the Facet pump is close to and below the fuel tank (why do Rimmers say it can be mounted in the engine compartment?). But on a 1976-82 SD1:

1. the fuel tank is about the lowest point on the underbody;

2. the OEM carb feed in tank pump pushes fuel up a pipe and out of the top of the tank, meaning any aftermarket gravity
fed type fuel pump will have to work extra hard at sucking fuel upwards out of the tank and may burn out.

How have others resolved this problem?

Or is there a higher pressure in tank pump that can be used with the existing pump/fuel gauge sender hanger assembly? Such as a Pierburg diesel/carb Lift Pump (4-7 psi).

I have also heard that a 5 litre VL Holden Commodore (86-88) lifter pump (in tank pre pump for efi externally mounted high pressure pump) may work i.e.

Dont forget that if the fuel pipe runs down the outside of the tank to your new facet it will not be sucking up against gravity- you will have a syphon type pipe thus the fuel coming down in one side balances against the other going up! I am using my std in tank (injection) pump as a lift pump into a large swirl tank, then got an electric holley pump beside the swirl tank pushing right up to carb.

Hope this helps,

Ive been using a Red top pump for a few years now with my 4.6/ edelbrock 500.
Pump sits directly above fuel tank in the boot and have never had a problem. Didnt even need to prime it, sucks up hill just fine.

Thanks guys. Just ordered a Facet Red Top from Mini Spares (cheaper than elsewhere it seems). Looking underneath I think the place to mount it might be on top of the cross member than runs across the transmission tunnel. I'm using 3/8 Aeroquip "socketless" hose from the tank to tne carb (via a Holley pressure regulator).

Presumably I just need to remove the existing SD1 in-tank pump from the end of the pump/sender/feed pipe framework and put the framework back in minus the old pump.
