14CUX Hotwire EFi and Piper 270/110 camshaft?

Hi all,

I'm just planning to install a 14CUX Hotwire system on my Rover V8 and from Curtis' Jacobson's excellent write-up 'Service and Troubleshoot Rover 14CUX Electronic Fuel Injection' http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Rover-14CUX-EFI.htm I noted his comment that 'the 14CUX system has a hard time adapting to a cam with a lobe separation angle under 112 degrees' and wonder what I might experience without replacing the cam which has a 110 degree lsa and is just a fast road cam - good idle, good midrange and good torque?

best regards

I tried this exact combination some years back on my landrover as I wanted the torque of the 270/110. If anything, it lost torque in the lower midrange and fell flat on its face at 4200rpm. Idle was rather lumpy as well, but the biggest issue was the HC emissions at idle - it was a struggle to get it through an MOT. In conclusion, I'd say that the hotwire and 270/110 cam are not compatible, sorry.

Hi guys,
So you can say, that the piper 270/110 isn´t good for a offroad vehicle!?
I´ve fitted a "old" ( bought it new on ebay, but it was stored for years )
270/108 and I also think it´s not as torquey in the lower refs, as the 3.9 RV8 camshaft I used before the change.
I´ve got 2 sheets with the datas for the cams.
The one that came with my cam says, that the lift is .445", the webpage of piper says .420".
So what is a real good torquey cam for a LR 90 V8 4.6 :?:
The Landy at the moment is in Nairobi, after a Trans-Africa-Trip in January/February 2009. So I can´t do anything at the mo, but perhaps I can change this when I´m back.

Presumably you had the cam face machined to fit the 4.6 engine, but that spec of cam is never going to work with the standard injection system, because it will have far too much overlap, and at low RPM there will be a lot of exhaust gas reversion back into the plenum which will have a serious effect on bottom end power. The fuelling will also be confused by the airflow meter reading the reversion pulses.

There are Hi torque cams available which will work with the standard EFI.

You could talk to John Eales a JE Developments who I believe modifies off road Rover engined vehicles so could probably recommend one.

Kevin.

Thanx for your responses.

I've got some more information, having spoken direct with Piper, there are two '270/110' cams, the VBP270i is a 270/110 cam and is designed to be used with Injection, however the VBP270 seems to be a 270/108 which is not ideal for injection, it may be this that Curtis was referring to?
