Not got a pump, but I have recent memory of the P6 manifold, so I can be fairly sure what the pipes on the pump do:

Large pipe - inlet from bottom of radiator.
Small pipe on rear closest to cylinder 2 - heater return
Small pipe on rear closest to cylinder 1 - thermostat bypass.

where do i plumb in the heater pipes under the manifold..

sorry not sure what the thermostat bypass is. :? :?

Do you have one or two heater pipes under the manifold? If it's two, you can connect what would be the thermo bypass to the other one. I think that's how mine was before I changed the engine.

Thermostat bypass - if you look at the thermostat housing on the manifold, there may be an additional connection - this is the bypass. Not all Rover V8s used them, particularly the earlyier ones IIRC.

have you got any pictures of them , i assume you mean the ones at the front ?
the rear should have one running underneath and one on a small stub bolted to the back of the manifold ? these are heater flow and return , as far as i can remember one of the ones at the front goes to the back of the water pump housing via a double bend short pipe and the other goee to the header tank , but they did so many variations of layouts with out pictures it's difficult to tell
some have one pipe coming out of the middle and some have 2 some have 2 pipes running along the r/h rocker cover etc etc
i have various manuals here and none of them have a decent picture of the the layout in them
the bypass pipe is part of the thermostat housing the part that the top hose goes to or from

Garry,

What manifold do you have and does the themostat housing cover have one large and one small inlet.

You say it'a P6 pump, it looks like one but I can't see the bypass outlet in your pictures, does it have one?

looking from front of engine:

Right pipe from manifold goes to right pipe pointing backwards from the front cover.

Left pipe on manifold goes to outlet pointing up on the front cover. This is the return from the heater and if memory serves is just a pipe running under the manifold.

Other connection to the heater will be on the back of the manifold and I think its a spout bolted to the manifold its self.

Don't know if you need it or not but the large outlet on the manifold is the top radiator connection and the large connection on the pump itself goes to the bottom of the radiator.
Your front cover is definitely a 2wd one but whether its a P5-6 or an SD1 I cant tell as they look pretty much identical with the main difference being the oil pump is larger on the later one.

Im as confused as you! I have a P6 engine with what appears to be the same water pump. To make things more complicated I have a edelbrock intake, dual thermostat housing and a volvo header tank as my audi rad does not have a cap! Ive tried a couple of variations but im still not convinced that its set up right! If you have a breakthrough let me know.

Hi Loz V8 Capri,
It sounds like your struggling so I've tried to simplify things.

Bottom of radiator goes to water pump.
Small pipe on back of timing cover goes to small pipe on thermostat housing.
Small pipe on the back of the inlet manifold goes to heater.
Return pipe from heater goes under inlet manifold to small pipe on top of water pump.
Large pipe on thermostat goes to top of radiator.

Hope this helps. :)

Cheers Ged, i will have a look tomorrow, think i made it harder for myself when putting in a header tank. I wasnt really to sure which was the best place to plumb it in!
